Terrorism is on the rise. But why don’t we call it terrorism? Because white supremacy is an ideology that pervades EVERY FACET of life in western society. These gunmen are extremists, yes, but their murderous acts are part of a much larger ideology practiced by conservatives and liberals alike. It’s in our education system, ingrained in the textbooks and the curriculum, thinly veiled behind inequitable funding and concepts like “school choice”. We see it in who can buy their way into the best schools, and in what colors our ideas about “the best schools”. It is perpetuated by the media. They tell us how they really feel by their editorial choices, by the stories they publish, the words they choose and the frames they hang around each article, news report, commercial and award-winning white savior film. We hear it on the radio and see it in the way music and artists are segregated, marketed, bought and sold.We see it in our cities, in the way permits are awarded, in the way land is bought and valued, in the way money is loaned and granted. We see it in the way our police departments operate, in who they target, who they ticket, who they arrest, indict, prosecute, convict, sentence, jail and execute. And yes, we see it in religion, at 11am on Sunday morning. We see it in the very face of God.The mainstream is white supremacist. The concept of “normal” is white supremacist. Western civilization and culture is white supremacist, and every bit as destructive to human life and liberty as some gunman with an AR-15. So this is why these people are not called “terrorists”. They may be extremists, but the only people who are called “terrorists” are the people who terrorize “the mainstream”. And y’all ain’t scared of them. Because they don’t threaten your way of life. They seek to preserve it. But HOW do they want to preserve it? By terrorizing the rest of us.
