A Tale of American History illustrated through Funk Music!
Fifteen-time Detroit Music Award Winner, International Recording Artist, Mentor and Producer Nadir Omowale and his ensemble of funk astronauts are incubating a cosmic celebration of Juneteenth 2020, Black Music Month, and Freedom with a funky interactive American history party entitled “Land of Freedom: The Funky Side of US History from Juneteenth to The Present”.
Nadir Omowale is a forever disciple of The Funk, a student of history and a vocal advocate for social justice. Southern born and church bred, he was baptized in the Funk at an early age. Soaking up the sounds of Curtis Mayfield, P-Funk, Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind and Fire as a child, and later with adolescent hormones raging, as Prince, Rick James and The Time blazed on to the scene, he devoted himself early on to the Future of the Funk.
For this special program, Omowale and his expert ensemble of Detroit funk performers will explore the American experience from Juneteenth to today, through the lens of Funk as Freedom Song. The program in development traces the history of the United States, African Americans, and American liberation, using the lyrics and music of famous Funk songs to illustrate the story.
